Norwegian government-owned energy group Statkraft has revealed plans to develop approximately three gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy projects in the Republic of Ireland by 2030. This ambitious initiative is equivalent to over half of the current peak demand in the country.

Key Points

🌍 Current and Upcoming Projects

The roadmap incorporates 1.5 GW of projects that are either recently constructed or currently in the construction phase.

An additional 330 megawatts (MW) of planned projects are supported by the Irish government's renewable energy supply scheme or corporate power purchase agreements.

Statkraft secured a contract last year, in partnership with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, to develop a 500 MW offshore wind farm off the coast of Dublin, Meath, and Louth.

📈 Land Acquisition and Pipeline

Statkraft has secured adequate land to facilitate a pipeline of 200-250 MW of projects to be submitted for planning permission each year over the next three to four years.

The company has 400 MW of wind and solar projects with planning permission and 375 MW of similar projects that have been submitted for authorization to An Bord Pleanála.

⚡ Alignment with National Goals

The target of developing these projects by 2030 aligns with the Irish government's goal of generating 80% of electricity from renewable sources by the end of the decade.

Statkraft's plan positions it to be one of the largest operators in Ireland as demand for electricity grows amid economic expansion and national efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

🔄 Integrated Approach

Statkraft emphasizes a fully integrated approach to clean energy production, recognising the importance of a diverse range of renewable technologies to meet Ireland's energy needs.

🎯 Government Targets

The Irish government aims for 8.2 GW of onshore and 5 GW of offshore wind by 2030 to support the transition to a more sustainable and decarbonized energy sector.

Statkraft entered the Irish market in 2018 through the acquisition of the Irish and UK wind development business of Element Power Group. This substantial investment underscores the company's commitment to contributing significantly to Ireland's renewable energy landscape.
